Staying Safe on the Road During the Holiday Season

Highway

The beginning of the holiday season is here and this year, AAA predicts that nearly 54 million people – which is 2.5 million more than last year – will hit the roads and sky in traveling at least fifty miles from home. The overwhelming majority of these travelers, or 48.5 million of them, will be driving.

As excited as you may be to reach your destination, it is imperative that you give extra attention to the road. In 2017, Thanksgiving weekend was second only to the Fourth of July for fatalities that occurred on the road during a holiday.

Whether you will be picking out a turkey and hosting at your home or traveling to a family member or friend’s house, it is important to stay safe so that you and your loved ones can have many more to enjoy in the coming years.

Before Hitting the Road

Prepare your smallest family members. Make sure any car or booster seats are sized appropriately for your little ones.

Map out your route in advance. Having an idea of where you are going ahead of time will allow you to plan disruptions in your route for things such as bathroom breaks, rest stops, and food.

Get plenty of rest beforehand and plan to switch drivers if you will be going a long distance. Go to bed early the night before you hit the road. Be mindful of taking prescription or over-the-counter drugs that can make you groggy.

During the Drive

Disconnect from technology. Refrain from texting and driving. In addition to the risk it poses for you and other drivers, long drives are a great time to bond with the loved ones traveling with you.

Be aware of other drivers’ potential alcohol consumption. Alcohol use is popular during holidays, especially at night. Look out for and distance your car from vehicles that are swerving, erratically crossing lanes, rapidly changing speed, and/or almost hitting other vehicles and objects.
