This program entailed spraying sidewalks, the perimeter baywalk, grassy park areas, and even benches and trash barrels with a product called Virex Plus One disinfectant for two hours every morning. Residents report that the treatments, which were applied by maintenance employees wearing hazmat suits, apparently killed some foliage and left a strong odor in the area. Multiple residents and even their pets reportedly became ill within a week of the program being implemented.

Despite the residents repeatedly contacting the management company with concerns and even obtaining confirmation from the Virex manufacturer that the way the management company was using the chemical was correct, it reportedly took the involvement of the county’s Department of Environmental Resources Management for an evaluation of Brickell Key for the association to stop spraying. Residents remain worried about the potential long-term effects of this chemical exposure which currently remain unclear.
