Staying Safe After a Car Accident

As we all know, car accidents are a part of life and unfortunately, many of them are unavoidable. For example, in 2017 there were over 400,000 car accidents here in the Sunshine State according to Florida’s Department of Highway and Safety Motor Vehicles. According to the Palm Beach Post, a resident of West Palm Beach incurred fatal injuries in a recent Saturday on Interstate 95 when he was struck by another vehicle after his own was involved in a car accident. The 51-year-old man who perished in the crash apparently overlooked a BMW and collided into it with his 1997 Toyota Tacoma. He then exited his vehicle and was tragically struck by a third vehicle which projected him into his truck bed. He was pronounced dead at Delray Medical Center a short time later.

What Should You Do to Stay Safe After a Car Accident?

  • Remain calm. While it is totally understandable for you to be upset following an accident, remaining calm is the best way for you to keep an objective view of what is happening in your surroundings and, therefore, to help you remain safe in light of them.
  • Stay in your car. If your car isn’t in any more danger, leave it where it is. This will help keep you safe and also help substantiate your assertions once the police arrive and are trying to determine exactly what happened. However, you should move your car if you’re in the flow of traffic and could be hit again.
  • Call 9-1-1. Even if you see witnesses around you, don’t assume that someone else has called 9-1-1. Use your cell phone to call and then attempt to stay on the phone until first responders arrive.
